Stop while you are still on top. Leave while you are still happy.

A parent approached me, telling me how her child has spoken fondly of me as a computer teacher. The parent then asked me, “Why did you not join a computer company instead and earn more?” She pointed out that there is much money waiting for someone of my talent.

I replied, "Yes, I was with the corporate world, and I left because I had achieved enough to say it is time to give up and go back to teaching again. Teaching runs in my blood, and my heart keeps on leading me to it no matter where I go. Even when I said before that I grew tired of it, I still went back when I regained strength and confidence.

I realized tonight that not everyone knows how to stop. Some people just want to keep on going. I remember someone saying this to me, “Stop while you are still on top. Leave while you are still happy.” I have kept that in mind. I know for certain there has to be a limit for all the achievements you want to get. No, it is not resignation on my part but more of an acceptance of capabilities and weaknesses.

When one does not have this acceptance, one will just wander around trying to reach for an imagined top. When one is already on top, there is no other way but down. Not everything lasts for a lifetime… all I want to do is to keep my family well-fed while teaching others how to achieve and learn when to say or declare that it is enough.
